The Barn

29/10/16 - 5/11/16                                                                                                                                   This was our second visit to "The Barn" and it was just as delightful and welcoming as the first. The weather wasn't quite so kind to us this time, but that just helped us appreciate how warm and cosy the cottage is. Once again we had our four furry girls with us and they enjoyed it as much as ourselves.  Many Thanks.                                                                                                      P &K. This is our second visit to "The Barn" it has matured since September 2013, just as good. We had a superb week for October. Have been to most of the local attractions:- Dunnet, Dunnet Head, Dunnet Bay, Duncansby Head &Stacks, Ackergill and Sinclairs Bay, Holburn Head plus a 240 mile round trip to the Crask Inn, Kinlochbervie, Durness and Tongue. The whole area is quiet after the holiday season. we were concerned that the cottage might not be warm enough in late October, but no concerns. Thank you for the welcome pack.

An excellent cottage in a beautiful setting. we have really enjoyed our few days in "The Barn" and would love to return to see the area in the springtime. Fortunately we had sunny days but a bit windy. We have been amazed by the scenery from Dunnet Head and Duncansby Stacks. This is definately the best presented and equipped cottage we have stayed in, in our two months in the UK. Any cottages we stay in during the next 6 months will have a hard act to follow. Your welcome pack was lovely especially the home made cakes. Many thanks for a wonderful stay.

A very comfortable cottage with everything we needed, thank you for the welcome pack. We loved the peace and quietness of the area, and enjoyed the boats, tides and big skies from the patio window. The visit to Dunnet Head on a clear day provided beautiful views. We took our car over to Orkney via the Gills Bay ferry, a sunny day and very rewarding to visit Skara Brae, other archaelogical sites and the lovely St Magnus Cathedral. A visit to Thurso and the Caithness Horizons Museum gave a well presented history of the area. We have learnt a lot about how people made their living here - fishing, flagstones &crofting and welcoming visitors! Thank you for a great stay.     G &JM. What a lovely surprise when we found "The Byre". We had travelled up from Peebles, it had been a slow tiring journey but worth it when we found such a welcoming retreat with stunning views. Our visit combined visiting family with a little site seeing, so to have somewhere peaceful at the end of the day to recharge our batteries was perfect. Here we sat and talked a great deal. Had a wonderful laugh and taken life at a completely different pace. For us Scotland has a calming effect on life with the added bonus af family and friends nearby. This part of scotland will always hold a draw for us, especially now as the wind howls, the rain falls and "The Byre"offers a cosy bolt hole with tea and biscuits..... Thank you Alex &Isobel                                                                                                      L, F, &J not forgetting Rufus our dog. "The Byre" is a perfect holiday cottage, welcoming comfy &cosy. Location is fantastic, quiet and remote but with great walks and views to die for. The weather was kind to us, even able to sit outside some days. The sunsets over the Orkney Islands were superb every night of our stay. walked along to the Castle of Mey, both for a visit and an evening stroll. Caithness County Show was on whilst we visited, super trip out although weather not great. Good to mingle with the locals and their animals, all very friendly. Loved it here, loved the welcome pack too. Can't think of any negatives, as I said previously "perfect".

Well equipped cottage, comfortable. I loved sitting by the window watching the sea go by and the ever changing views and weather. Locally we enjoyed a drive down the coast stopping at a few harbours, Lybster was lovely with great tea rooms. Dunbeath was nice. A drive up the 897 from Helmsdale was worth it, stopping off for a spot of bird watching. Thanks to Alex for making us feel welcome and the welcome pack was lovely too. Enjoyed a scenic walk from John O Groats to Duncansby Head made even better by the sunny weather. Only stayed 3 nights, would have loved to have stayed longer. After a 13 hour drive from Lancashire, what can I say, the welcome pack was the best thing I saw all day! After a cuppa we were able to take in the cottage. We could not get over the space for a one bedroom place. The cottage has everything you could need and want for a perfect stay. We visited John O Groats, the ice cream parlour is worth a visit. Duncansby Head - it was a wonder to see all the birds with their chicks. I usually struggle on hilly areas but managed the walk all the way to the Stacks it is quite accesible. Dunnet head has some great views and very accesible again with disbled parking further up the hill so less to walk. Strathy Point was our only let down as we couldn't take dog, they don't allow it. Dunnet Bay has a beautiful beach with steps down to the sand. The best beaches for me were the ones on our way to Durness, that was worth the drive. Our last visit was to Mary Annes Cottage, just down the road. £3 entry well worth a visit if you want an insight into crofting life in the 1800's and 1900's. Alex and his lovely wife, the cake maker are on hand for any information. It was always a pleasure waking up here, having daily visits from the seals in the harbour below was a great treat. I counted 10 on our last day all sunning themselves on the pebbles. we loved our stay and will be back with our very tired Choco Lab.                   J &JR Lancs.

We have had a most enjoyable stay here in this lovely cottage which has been ideal for travellingall around this area. The cottage  was spotless an arrival and the welcome goodies... what can we say? The cakes were scrumptious. We enjoyed a tour of the Castle of Mey followed by a delicious meal. Visited Wick, Thurso, Bettyhill, Tongue, John O Groats, Dunnet Head plus many harbours etc. It was lovely to see the seals basking on the rocks and being able to walk along such peaceful roads. We went to Wick Heritage Centre £4 entry but well worth every penny as you could spend hours looking around. We went to Scarfskerry Baptist Church at 1:00pm on Sunday and although only a handful of people there, we were made most welcome. Our Border Collie loved all his long walks and meeting so many people and dogs who were all so friendly. If at all possible we will certainly be back.

Thanks again.                                                            A, C, E &T and Izzy the dog. Very comfortable accomodation and extremely well equipped. The welcome pack was a lovely surprise, thank you, the cakes were yummy. Enjoyed a scenic walk from John O Groats to Duncansby Head made even better by the sunny weather. Only stayed 3 nights, would have loved to have stayed longer. Loved the beach at Dunnet too - we were the only people there. Thank you for a lovely stay.

Lovely cottage, real comfort and great welcome pack &cakes, 1st class. We loved the area, great day visit to Orkney from John O Groats. Local scenery breathtaking and was better than forecast so a big bonus. Worth walking along to the Castle of Mey for coffee and visit to gardens and animal centre. We will certainly consider a return visit.
